The 5th of May I was ordered by the comptroller to pay L200, whichwas loan money lent me by the comptroller in the king’s name;and, by a message from General Gibbs, he charg’d me that if themoney was not paid he would send me to prison. I inform’d thecomptroller that the money had been paid. He said it had not, andsent for me to his lodgings, where he told me the affair was amatter of state: and, giving me his reasons, he said that he mightmatch me with one of my constituents in the legislature. He concludedthat he had the power to do as he pleased in such cases, whichI did not dispute.
The next morning I made remittance of the money, and wrote himby return of the bearer, Mr. Leigh, &c. the exchange of the notesand money to be exactly completed. The reply this gentlemanreturn’d, was as follows:
I hope I shall not any longer trouble Col. — with regard to hismoney, which I have paid. Mr. — assured me at the time that hewould make the account at board accurate, with the new current money,which I must have. If that accounts will not do, I am easy aboutit; he shall have as much more next quarter as is due to him; andif it is not as much as he demands, and there be an over-paymentin the residue, he need only refuse it to me, and I shall be, ason as the money shall be paid, at his disposal, to do him good bypaying the balance over. If it be not sufficient, and the greaterquantity be over, his account shall be exactly prestented withthe residue, and that will render his account as regular as anyone ever will give.
