More significantly, Adobe included a discrete “Clone Tool” in the Find & Select the same way it did in Naked 6. It takes very little effort to duplicate a ton of artwork on the fly to show someone or print it, so it’s something that will save a ton of time for a lot of people. You can move an individual layer or an entire layer group, duplicating it onto a new layer along with the adjustments and text. The Copy Layer dialog includes a smart button with a “Create Clipboard” icon, which allows you to make multiple copies, including “Clone Layer” and “Duplicate Layer”. The tool has extensive options for allowing you to modify the nature or appearance of the copy you’re making, and you can even change the name of the clone or turn it into a smart object.

However, the most important thing to be aware of is that this “Clone Tool” is not exactly a “clone tool” in the way you might be thinking of it. Adobe gives it some functionality similar to Clone Tools you might use make copies of simple assets for display purposes, such as images, buttons or other flat vector graphics. But it’s also not a (true) “smart tool” that makes a “smart object”, nor is it a “copy tool” that copies the content and then applies a rotation or other action or effect.

The Clone Tool is actually bad news. It creates layer groups that allow for further action, including masking, cloning, editing, hierarchy, etc. It does not work the same way Photoshop 6’s Duplicate Layer did. (Note: I say it does not work in the same manner, because the Duplicate Layer tool is actually still there, it’s just not connected to a tool.)
